Scouting frequency by stage

Weekly through vegetative growth; twice weekly during the critical reproductive window (corn VTโ€“R3, soybean R1โ€“R5) when both insect pressure and fungicide decisions peak. After any storm or extended wet period, check for disease โ€” humidity in the canopy is the trigger for most foliar pathogens.

Economic thresholds beat calendar sprays

A threshold is the pest level where expected damage equals control cost. Below it, spraying loses money and burns resistance. Extension services publish thresholds by crop/pest (e.g., soybean aphid at 250 per plant with rising populations pre-R5). Write your local thresholds on a card in the truck โ€” decisions get much faster.

Where drones fit

Two ways: imaging (NDVI/RGB flights flag stressed zones so you scout the right spots rather than the whole field) and response (once scouting says go, a drone can treat within hours โ€” including wet fields โ€” which is exactly when thresholds are crossed). Timing tool: fungicide timing.
