Bushels needed = total cost per acre รท crop price. Example: a $12/acre application plus $10/acre product = $22 รท $4.20 corn = 5.2 bu/acre to break even. Now the honest question: does the trial evidence support โฅ5.2 bu in this field, with this disease pressure? Corn fungicide averages ~+5 bu when disease is present โ which means at these prices it's a coin flip absent real pressure, and a clear win with it.
Why thresholds move
- Crop price up โ threshold drops (protecting bushels is worth more).
- Application cost down โ threshold drops.
- Late season / low remaining yield potential โ threshold rises; less left to protect.
- Susceptible hybrid, wet forecast, history of the disease โ effectively lowers your action point.
Insects vs disease: different math
Insect thresholds are countable (aphids per plant, % defoliation) โ use published numbers. Fungicide decisions are probabilistic: you're buying insurance against pressure that may or may not arrive. Weight by hybrid susceptibility, canopy humidity, disease history, and the forecast โ and be willing to skip.
