Start with the rule: under Part 107 a remote pilot may operate one aircraft at a time. Multi-aircraft operation by a single pilot requires a waiver, and your Part 137 exemption may set its own conditions. Two aircraft, two pilots is the simple compliant answer.

Deconfliction: keep them apart on purpose

The logistics scale faster than the flying

Two aircraft means roughly double the batteries, double the mix throughput, and a nurse tank that drains twice as fast. If your ground station was the bottleneck with one aircraft, adding a second just makes both wait โ€” fix the field station first.

Crew roles that work (4 people)

  1. Pilot A โ€” flies block A only.
  2. Pilot B โ€” flies block B only.
  3. Loader โ€” mixes and fills, never leaves the station.
  4. Battery/utility โ€” charging rotation, cooling, water resupply, watches the sky for traffic.

When it actually pays

A second aircraft makes sense when you're turning away acres, not when you want more capacity in theory. Run the numbers: added fixed cost (aircraft, batteries, insurance, a second pilot's wage) against realistic added acres at your contribution margin โ€” see unit economics. Many operators find a better ground station buys more acres than a second drone.
