Rule of thumb: below roughly 1,000โ1,500 owned acres a year, hiring usually wins on pure math. Above that โ or if you'll spray for neighbors โ ownership starts to pay. The licensing timeline moves the line more than most people expect.
Hiring a service โ pros and cons
- Pro: zero capital. No $25kโ$60k aircraft + batteries + trailer; you pay per acre only when you spray.
- Pro: zero licensing burden. The operator carries Part 107/137, the state applicator license, insurance, records โ 3โ6 months of work you skip entirely.
- Pro: experience on day one. Calibration, drift, swath โ you're buying reps, not learning on your own crop.
- Con: scheduling risk. In a disease week, everyone calls at once. A good operator manages a queue; you're still in a queue.
- Con: per-acre cost forever. Hiring never converts into an owned asset.
- Con: less spontaneity. Seeing a problem Saturday morning and flying it yourself Saturday afternoon is an owner's privilege.
Owning your own โ pros and cons
- Pro: total control. Spray exactly when scouting says, at your rate, on your schedule.
- Pro: economics at scale. Direct costs can drop well under custom rates once acreage is high โ and neighbor work turns the machine into a revenue line (see the unit-economics lesson).
- Pro: a new skill/business. Some operations grow a real custom-application side from one aircraft.
- Con: real capital. Aircraft, extra batteries, generator, trailer, water handling โ plus insurance and repairs.
- Con: the licensing gauntlet. Part 107 โ registration โ medical โ 44807 โ Part 137 โ state applicator license: months, even done right. Our Part 137 guide and the free Ohio course shorten it, but it's not a weekend.
- Con: you own the liability. Drift complaints, records, chemical handling โ the buck stops with your license.
- Con: utilization risk. A drone that flies 10 days a year is expensive lawn art. Capacity pays only when acres flow through it.
A simple decision framework
- Count your realistic acres/year (all passes, all crops, plus honest neighbor demand).
