The pros โ where drones genuinely win
- No wheel tracks, no compaction. A loaded self-propelled sprayer runs 30,000โ40,000 lb and costs you 1.3โ2.5% of the field in tracks (Iowa State/Wisconsin trials). A drone weighs nothing on your soil and costs you zero rows.
- Wet fields, on time. Fungicide timing doesn't wait for ground to dry. Drones fly the same day it rains โ often the whole reason a pass pays.
- Terrain freedom. Steep ground, terraces, waterways, odd corners, standing corn at tassel โ all reachable without damage.
- Precision. RTK-guided passes with as-applied maps: no skips, no double-spray, records your agronomist can audit.
- Less water hauled. Ultra-low-volume application can cut carrier water up to ~90% vs ground spraying โ fewer nurse-tank round trips.
- Spot and small-field economics. Mobilizing a drone for 15 acres is trivial; mobilizing a 120-ft rig or a plane is not.
- Safety posture. Nobody rides the sprayer; the operator stands clear of the chemical cloud and the machine.
The cons โ where drones honestly fall short
- Capacity. ~40 acres/hour on paper shrinks with refills and battery swaps; a big ground rig or ag plane covers several times that. On 2,000 flat, dry acres, the rig is still king.
- Small tanks = logistics. 10โ18 gal tanks mean many loads. Your day is won or lost at the mix trailer, not in the air.
- Battery churn. All-day spraying needs a pile of packs and a generator โ a real cost and a real failure point.
- Label limits. Some products lack aerial language or set minimum GPA above comfortable drone volumes; a few prohibit aerial outright. The label decides, not the aircraft.
- Regulatory load. Part 107 + Part 137 (+44807 for heavy drones) + state applicator licensing is months of work โ a barrier DIYers underestimate (and the reason hiring is attractive).
- Weather still rules. Wind and inversions ground drones like anything else; small aircraft are arguably more wind-sensitive than a heavy boom near the canopy.
- Coverage debates. With very low carrier volumes, contact products that demand drenching coverage can underperform vs properly set ground application โ product-by-product judgment, driven by trial data.
So when does a drone make sense?
Choose a drone pass when: the field is wet, hilly, small, odd-shaped, or in standing crop; when compaction/track loss matters; when timing beats raw speed; or when the alternative is skipping the pass entirely.
Choose ground (or a plane) when: you're covering huge flat acreage on dry ground with a high-volume label, and per-hour capacity is the whole game.
